Jessica Pegula is into the second week of Roland Garros for the second time in her career after defeating Marketa Vondrousova 3-6 6-4 6-2.
The American is into the fourth round in Paris for the second time in her career after coming back from a set down to seal victory.
Next Pegula will play either Lois Boisson or Elsa Jacquemot.
Despite the victory, Pegula had some problem solving to do in the match as Vondrousova made a quick start to the match.
The former finalist had spent the last three months out injured but had made her mark in Paris and did the same in this match, using the dropshot and lob combination to good effect.
After breaking in the fifth game, Vondrousova continued to frustrate Pegula consistently with the American failing to break back in the following game.
Too many unforced errors were produced from Pegula who struggled to adapt her groundstrokes to Vondrousova’s tricky game.
Another break of serve in the ninth game sealed the first set for Vondrousova who looked on course to knock out another seed at a Grand Slam.
In the second set both players started with breaks of serve but ultimately it was Pegula who adapted her tactics better to get past the Czech Republican.
The American produced power and depth, finishing points off at the net to seal a quick double break lead at 4-1.
Despite Pegula’s dominance on return, the US Open finalist failed to finish off her chances as she was too relaxed in the big moments.
The variety and power worked a treat for Vondrousova as she rallied back into the match gaining one of the breaks back and saved six set points in the process.
On the seventh set point, Pegula finally took her chance to level up the match at one set all.
In the final set both players remained proactive on return but it was Pegula who took consistent control of the contest.
More aggressive play in important moments saw Pegula break on three occasions to seal a 5-2 lead.
This time there was no relaxation as an ace finished off the match with Pegula booking her place into the last 16.
The American will be heavy favourite when she faces either Lois Boisson or Elsa Jacquemot.
In other results today Mirra Andreeva booked her place in the last 16 with a dominant 6-3 6-1 win over Yulia Putintseva.
Andreeva will now face Daria Kasatkina on Monday after the 17th seed defeated Paula Badosa 6-1 7-5.
The winner of that match could face Pegula in the quarter-finals.
