Rafael Nadal’s return to competitive tennis following a lengthy injury break has been halted after the former world No.1 withdrew from the Australian Open on Sunday.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion says his decision to do so was prompted by a ‘small problem’ with his muscle that he sustained during this week’s Brisbane International where he lost in the quarter-finals to Jordan Thompson. Nadal was playing in his first tournament in almost a year after being sidelined from action due to a hip injury which he had to undergo surgery on last summer.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Spaniard confirmed that he has suffered a micro tear in his muscle but it is not in the same region where he has had his previous injury. Although he didn’t elaborate any more on the issue. Following his loss to Thompson on Friday, Nadal told reporters that he was ‘not 100%’ sure if he would be able to play at the Australian Open. During that match, he left the court to have a medical timeout.
“During my last match in Brisbane, I had a small problem on a muscle that as you know made me worried. Once I got to Melbourne I have had the chance to make an MRI and I have micro tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news.” Nadal wrote on X.
“Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in 5 sets matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and rest.”
Despite the latest setback, Nadal is maintaining an upbeat outlook with his goal to be back to full fitness in time for the clay season. In Brisbane, he managed to get two wins under his belt with victories over Dominic Thiem and Jason Kubler.
“I have worked very hard during the year for this comeback and as I always mentioned my goal is to be at my best level in 3 months.” He stated.
“Within the sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season.
“I really wanted to play here in Australia and I have had the chance to play a few matches that made me very happy and positive. Thanks all for the support and see you soon! Rafa.”
Nadal didn’t comment on how long it may take him to recover from his latest injury or when his next tournament will be. It is the first time in his career that he has missed four consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since his debut at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships.
Nadal will be replaced in the Australian Open main draw by Quentin Halys.
