Tristan Schoolkate claimed his first top 50 win on his sixth attempt at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers in Toronto, where he beat last year’s Next Gen Finals champion Joao Fonseca 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 after 1 hour and 33 minutes in a clash between two debutants at the Canadian Open.
Schoolkate hit 23 winners, including 10 aces. Both players went on serve en route to the tie-break. Fonseca started the tie-break with an early mini-break. Schoolkate earned two mini-breaks to close out the tie-break 7-5.
Schoolkate broke serve in the third game of the second set en route to winning the first set 6-4.
